Cyanotypes on Earth Day!

One thing that Claire and I enjoyed on Earth Day was doing a cyanotype workshop at a local farm. I'm glad we did! It included a nice informative tour of the farm, and then making not only cyanotype postcards, but a cool bandanna!

It was a fun process! Read on to see more!

For cyanotypes, you put objects onto paper (or cloth!) that has a special light-sensitive chemical applied to it. Claire had collected these items from around the farm. The covered area behind the objects stays white, and the rest of your canvas exposes to blue (or "cyan") in sunlight. Work quickly, as it starts exposing right away!

Here is the bandanna further into the process. We arranged the postcards in a dark little shed, then brought them out to expose them. When you're done, you rinse the chemical off thoroughly, then let it dry, all in darkness. Once dry, you're set!

I had only ever done cyanotypes as a kid, from a special kit with premade paper. I think it's cool that you can get your own chemicals and paint it on whatever you want! The workshop teacher told me what she used and I'll look into it and update this post! :)

The rest of Earth Day weekend was also a blast, with all of us going to a friend's Eid party, and seeing a play and getting Thai food with E and some friends! I've been really craving Thai iced tea ever since. ;)
